Newable’s Action Plan for Business

Newable has published a plan designed to stimulate businesses at the heart of the economy.

We live in uncertain times. Coalitions. Brexit. Hung Parliaments. In fact, many commentators argue that we live in times of radical uncertainty. The concept of radical uncertainty was first advanced by John Maynard Keynes back in the 1930’s. It has recently regained traction largely as the result of a recent book about the financial crisis and its aftermath by Mervyn King, the former Governor of the Bank of England. Both Maynard Keynes and King argue that in hugely uncertain environments there is no basis for making rational predictions about an unknowable future. The potential consequence in this risk scenario would be a “do nothing” stasis. No clear policy direction. No dynamic business plans. Little or no economic or social growth. However, both Maynard Keynes and King argue that the function of institutions is to have the courage to act in the face of the unknown and the unknowable.

Newable wants decision-making institutions to find the courage to act in support of businesses at the heart of the economy. Following on from our recent submission to the Industrial Strategy Green Paper, we have developed an Action Plan for Business. It contains nine simple, common sense “quick win” programmes to back small business, increase innovation and stimulate overseas trade.

The Action Plan is informed by Newable’s hands-on experience of helping around 15,000 British businesses a year start-up, scale-out and internationalise.

We look forward to engaging with partners, influencers and policy makers to ensure the voice of businesses at the heart of the economy is heard and that they are supported so that they can thrive and deliver much needed growth to local communities and therefore the nation as a whole.
